Leading Off the Semester

We've started the metaphoric discussion in-class, and the next step is to segue the discussion to an on-line tool (i.e. this blog). Based upon the discussion in class today, what was your definition of science, and how has it changed as a result of the discussion?

  1. I think of science as anything to do with the learning of living or non- living things, including microscopic organisms. I also think that science could be referred to as the knowledge of learning about how things work and operate.

Science is the study and the teachings of the world and the properties in it. The point of science is to answer all of the questions that haven't been answered yet. Scientists want to figure out why and how something works and what it could be used for. Scientists also want to fully understand the world and share and teach their knowledge to everyone, everywhere.

  3. I would describe science as the study and exploration of not only living and non living beings, organisms and objects, but a study of the way in which those objects live or fulfill their niche in their particular location. In addition, I would describe it as the study of specific structures.

    ReplyDelete
  4. science is the study of answering different theories by observing, And to discover things that were not expected to discover. And learning new things about the world that you live in.

  6. the general idea of science is knowledge in a way of examining predictions or explanations relative to the universe. With all of that comes the more detailed things like living and non-living species.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I think science is the study of why things are. So it is the study to give answers with a very deep explanation. We study science to get a better understanding of everything surrounding us.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Science, specifically biology, is the study of living organisms. I think that means that you have to explore every aspect of how a living organism works, including how it fits into the environment.

    ReplyDelete
  9. To me, I think the definition of "science" is (in a more general sense): the study and examination of any object or organism- in this case, whether it's living or non-living, through detailed observations.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Science is what I like to call the study of the wonders of everything that occurs in our universe. It deals with a range of topics, including living or non-living things, our Earth or anything outside of it. Science is the basis for many of our explanations for why everything exists. We are alive, and an important part of being alive is wanting to be aware of our surroundings. And science is our yearning as humans to learn more!

  11. My definition of science is something that has to do with the earth, or space. Almost everything in the universe has to do with science, thus making the definition everything.

  12. Science is the study of living and non-living organisms; some can be can seen and others not. Science teaches you that just because you can't see it doesn't mean that it is not there. There is so much that is not visible to the naked eye but through science we learn and understand what we can't see. Mostly everything in the world has something to do with science; from chemical reactions to gravity to cells, science plays a big part in our everyday lives.

  13. Before the discussion I thought that science was just what we learned in the past couple years, but it is so much more. Science is a lot of things, almost everything has something to do with science in some way. Living and non living things are apart of science but there is also chemical bonding, dissecting animals, and even the study of mold is a science. After the discussion I think that science is basically the study of why something happened or what it was in general. I also never thought that science was very important, but it actually is.

  14. I think the definition of science is the study of what composes life. It also includes the study of what composes matter and space.

@Patrice Scott: I like that idea that science is being aware of our surroundings, I have never thought of it that way!

  15. I think that science is really the study of how everything came to be and how everything is in life. The reasons for why we are here and what we should be doing are a part of science as well.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Science is sort of. . . life. But less cool. Science is in pretty much everything we do, and there's a science behind, that most of us know at an instinctual level.

    ReplyDelete
  17. To me science is everything. Even we, are a particle of science, and how we got her is one of the great topics Scientists debate frequently. Nature is a huge topic in science, and when you dissect the term "Nature" you find that mostly everything falls in that category. This supports my idea that science in everything.

  20. I think that the definition of science is something that can be studied and proven. Science has many different aspects. Some are related to chemicals and some are related to how the body works. During class I think that my definition has changed in the sense that I think that science covers more than what is typically considered science. Science does not have to be proved, that is what theories are for.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think of science as a study of answering. Everything in life has to do with science not just the living things. Science is made of hypothesis' and theories. The goal of science is to get answers.

To many science is just what you learn in school, what many don’t realize is that science is everything and everywhere. Science is the study of living and non-living and also gives us answers to the unknown. Everything we do has scientific reasoning behind it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. To me, science is the study of living and non- living organisms. Science also teaches us about the world and how things function in it. It is important to study science because it gives us understanding on life in general.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Science is a study of living and non-living things. There are many different parts of science. Science also happens everywhere and has to do with everything. We learn and continue learning about science all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Science is the study of living and also non-living things. (how original) Science has to do with everything in life. Without science there is literally nothing. My view on science hasn't changed at all from our first class.

    ReplyDelete
  26. In my opinions science is the study of life and why things are the way they are, why things survive or die in certain environments, and experimenting with different things to gain knowledge. I do not believe my definition of science has changed since the discussion in the first class, but it may as time goes on, and I become more educated in the field of science.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that science is the study of living things but they could also be dead. For example if you are dissecting something it is usually dead. My idea of science has changed since class because i have seen different opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  28. To me, Science is the study of everything. Science is all around us and makes up what we are. It helps us obtain the answers to questions about everything that might have an answer. Science is a broad term, and thus cannot be easily or specifically explained. The Scientific Method is a way in which scientists test their theories and answer these questions. The Scientific Method goes as such: asking a question, make a hypothesis (what you think will happen), gathering background information, experimentation (to prove or disprove a theory), collect data (to help prove your conclusion), analysis (what you might have done wrong or what you could have done to improve the results/experiment or any other comments), and finally a conclusion (where you state the end result and any other notes you might have). Science is always happening, even if we are unaware of it. As long as people ask questions and learn, there will always be Science.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Science, to me, is the study of living and non-living things which can be tested and examined through various tests and experiments.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Science is the study of things that can be proven on a realistic basis. It, to me, is the study of factual things. Science has to do with the environment, space, matter, sub atomic things, and basically how things work and move. Science is a very crucial thing to this world because without it we wouldn't know how to take care of our bodies, the earth, each other and how to make sure we can preserve our ecosystem.

    ReplyDelete
  31. In my opinion, science is the study of life and the world. Life meaning just about everything. The study of living and non-living things. My definition of science hasn't really changed since the discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think Science is a very broad term and there are many definitions for it. One of them being is that it is a study of how things work and the study of nature in all forms. Whether that be life or the laws that govern nature, and the world in which we live, it is all science.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Starting in the natural and ontological philosophical questions of Thales and other classical hellenic philosophers, science has remained a dialectical study of theories based on rationalism and empiricism regarding the properties of the universe. Compiled into fallible laws that should apply without exception, science helps us understand our environment. It has branched out into many categories including biology, chemistry, and physics.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Science is part of everything and everything pertains to science. It is the why in life.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The English word Science is derived from the Latin word "scientia," which means knowledge. I believe that the word knowledge is the best way to describe science, because there there is a science to everything in life. Whether you are practicing Medicine, or dancing ballet, there is a science to both of these things which you need to master, as there is with all things in life.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Before the discussion i just thought science was just about animals and what goes on in their body . But by us having that discussion it helped me go deeper in depth of what science is . So now I think science is the way how living and non - living things work in the world . Also science helps us understand whats going on in over environment such as species and how does it work .

    ReplyDelete
  37. Science is the study of us the universe around us,and branches into all aspects of the universe. There are broader fields such as physics and more specific fields such as biology. It explains what things are and how things work.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The definition of science is purely very simple. It is us human’s pursuing questions through observations.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Science is the study of everyday life. The study of science could either be non-living or living organism. There are different factors of science such as; planets, organism, chemicals and many more.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The definition of science is the study of life, whether it has to do with the Earth, the human body, Outer Space, the forces around us, or every little molecule. Science lets us ask questions about living and non-living organisms, and uses hypotheses, observations, and proof to find answers.

    ReplyDelete
  41. To me, science is the study of living things, but more specifically life in general. Without science, we wouldn't have anything, whether it's an atom or a galaxy. Science informs us not only about the world but about why and how everything around us exists.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The word science comes from the Latin word, “scientia,” which means knowledge. Science is a study of acquiring knowledge through observation and experiments to explain the natural phenomenon. But there are many different branches of science; biology for example, is natural science dealing with the study of life and living or non-living organisms.

    ReplyDelete
  43. In one sentence, science can be defined as the study of life. This is its general definition, but in science there are numerous sub categories, such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Science is very important to the world, because it allows us to answer questions we have about how things work and function

    ReplyDelete
  44. Science is the study of life. Science is not a religion, but it can explain how and why things happen. Science helps the world run more efficiently. For example, for fuel efficient cars; they use less gas and are better for the Earth. Science also helps make life longer; science helps create medicine.

    ReplyDelete
  45. At first I was not sure what I thought science was. I knew that science was all around us and that it was happening everywhere. Now I think that science is the study of the world through observations and experiments. Science is everything around us no matter if something is living or non-living.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Before this discussion I would define science as something that happens everywhere at anytime that has to do with planets such as earth and the living things on it.
After this discussion I wouldn't say my entire view of science has dramatically changed, but I would say that I was definitely enlightened on a few topics such as things being abiotic or biotic. Hopefully I will continue to learn more and more about science during the rest of the school year.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I used to think of Science as just another class but now I know that it is involved with pretty much everything we do. Science is the study of life, specifically the study of all organisms, living and non-living. After our discussion I learned much more than abiotic vs. biotic, but realized how much science occurs in our everyday life without even noticing it.

    ReplyDelete
  48. In my personal opinion, I find that science as the understanding of life. It tells us what goes up and why. It tells us of our anatomy, allowing us to know one's physical limits. It gives us either a reason why something happens, or gives us a good estimate. Of course, there are a lot of things even the greatest of the professionals are still having trouble understanding, but everyday we are getting closer to solving the many mysteries of science

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think that science is the study of life and how things work. It has to do with everything past and present. It explains why and how things happen.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Science is the study of every day life and things that are beyond our world (like the galaxy). To further our knowledge of science, you must question, and search for answers. Once you learn the answers, you question more and more, then you have a deeper understanding of the topic you are studying.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Science, I basically think, is the study of life. It touches on so many different subjects such as living and nonliving things, what makes up everything around us, and just the world in general, not to mention our large solar system. It focuses on so many different things and new discoveries are made everyday. Science helps us understand that whether we see it or not, there is some kind of logic or explanation behind everything for example, the clouds you see up in the sky. Science helps to answer why they are there, how they are made, and their importance. Science is life. My ideas of science have just been reinforced after the discussion.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Science is the study of the properties of the universe and things in it. I used to think of science as less relevant than it really is but now I realize that everything we do has some connection to science. It is the study of living and nonliving things and their properties, and how those things coexist and interact with each other.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I feel like science is the study of living and non-living things. It is a series of observations that brings us to conclusions. Sometimes it takes years and years to come to a conclusion, while sometimes it takes only a few minutes to come to a conclusion. I agree with Sophie when she said that science is all around us. This is true because we are made up of atoms and everything around us is made out of atoms and atoms are a huge part of science.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Before the discussion I though that science was just the study of how things work. I thought that science was a much smaller subject then what it is. After the discussion I realized that science is a much larger subject. There is the study of living and non-living things. Theres biology, chemistry, and physics. Basically everything around you is science weather you know it or not.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I consider science a broad term, almost impossible to define. It is the study of the way our world works through thorough observation and experiment. If one were to break down every aspect of a normal day, it would be possible to relate each one to science. Science is commonly overlooked or not thought about, people accepting that something happens just because that's the way it is. To probe deeper and determine WHY things do what they do would be to study a situation with science.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I would say that Science is hard to define. It is so many different things. For example, the study of living AND non-living organisms. We study by observing. The whole world is science so to pinpoint the exact definition of science is impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Science is a very broad term to define. Technically it is the study of the way objects react with each other, and the structure of living and non-living things. Science has three major things to it. Physics, Biology and Chemistry pretty much sum up what science is. You have matter mass and volume and how they react. And then Chemicals and atoms and how we create different elements. And then there is the study of living and non-living things.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Science is the study of everything in the universe. How they work, why the exist, how they came to be, how they react to each other, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Science is the study of how object are created, act, and move etc. Science can be broken into three main studies Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. These study tell us about our universe. They can also help us discover new things
